What we help you with

The whole German financial system in one clear strategy, in English.

Health insurance: the one decision you can't undo

Public or private (GKV vs. PKV) is often called the single most important financial choice you make in Germany, and it is a lifelong one, not a one-year one. After 55, switching back largely stops being an option. We compare both for your income, age and family, in English.

Hardest to reverse later

Income protection

The least talked about, most financially critical cover for working professionals here. If illness stops you working, it pays a monthly income. Protecting your earnings comes before building wealth.

Protect income first

Tax basics

How German tax residency affects your plan (general information; individual tax advice from a tax adviser).

Cross-border clarity

Pension & retirement

Statutory, occupational and private; we check which plans keep their value if you leave.

Investments

ETF plans, private equity and real estate.

Everything coordinated as one plan, not as scattered products.

Family-office approach

Same money. Three very different journeys.

The honest answer: it is not one or the other. Global shares and private markets delivered similar annualised returns over the periods shown, but private-market funds are valued quarterly and do not trade daily, so their reported volatility is not comparable with listed shares. Shares give you growth and daily access. Private-market funds are long-term and illiquid. Most people are best served by a mix, sized to what they actually need and when they need it.

Illustrative only, based on historical figures: global shares measured by the MSCI World Net TR in EUR, ten years to December 2025; private markets based on Partners Group Global Value SICAV, since inception in November 2009, institutional share class I in USD; the share class available to private investors has different costs and may differ; currency effects may increase or reduce euro returns; bank interest as a simplified average. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. Figures are before individual taxes and costs. Capital investments carry risk, including loss of capital. Private-market funds are long-term and illiquid: redemptions are limited or excluded and total loss is possible. Prospectus and Key Information Document are available from the provider and from us.

Why people trust the process

Clear answers, in your language, at your pace.

I came in with no expectations, simply to inform myself. I was educated transparently and thoroughly across a wide range of topics. What stood out: the advice felt very personal, and the focus was clearly on sharing knowledge, far more than on selling. I felt comfortable from the very start and was superbly looked after throughout.

Straight answers

Common questions from internationals in Dresden.

Is there an English-speaking financial advisor in Dresden?

Yes. Expat Family Office offers English-speaking financial advice for international professionals in Dresden and across Saxony, covering pension, health insurance, tax basics and investments. We select from around 250 product partners of our sales platform, and a licensed partner can approach over 400 banks for financing. The first consultation is free and without obligation.

Can I switch back from private to public health insurance?

Only under certain conditions, and after 55 that door largely closes. "I'll just switch back later" is a plan that can quietly expire on your 55th birthday. That's why this is a lifelong decision, not a one-year one. We look at your age, income, health and family before you choose.

Do I need public or private health insurance in Germany?

It depends on your income and status. Most employees are in public health insurance (GKV); higher earners, the self-employed and some others can choose private cover (PKV), which can mean faster appointments and broader benefits. The choice has long-term consequences, so we compare both for your exact situation.

Will I be taxed twice, in Germany and my home country?

Usually not, if a double taxation agreement exists. Germany has double-taxation agreements (Doppelbesteuerungsabkommen) with over 90 countries, which decide where each type of income is taxed. Whether your investments and home-country assets are treated favourably depends on the specific treaty, so it is worth checking before you decide. This is general information, not tax advice.

What happens to my German pension if I leave?

It generally stays credited to you. Statutory pension contributions (Deutsche Rentenversicherung) remain yours and can be paid out later under certain conditions, including from abroad. Private, unsubsidised plans can be built to move with you; subsidised plans (Riester, Rürup, company pension) have restrictions.

How can I invest as an expat in Germany?

Mainly through ETF savings plans, private-market investments and real estate. The right mix depends on your goals, timeline and whether you plan to stay. We set up the strategy in English and handle the paperwork for the products we arrange.

Is the first consultation really free?

Yes, free and without obligation. You receive no invoice from us. If you implement a solution with us, the provider pays us a commission that is included in the product costs; we disclose its nature and, for investments, the amount before you sign.
